Backer heroes

Backer heroes are pre-generated, non-random heroes created by the Kickstarter backers of Darkest Dungeon. All backer heroes come with one aggravated negative quirk and two locked positive quirks that are always the same for any unique hero name. Additionally, every hero has their own combination of skills unlocked by default; locked skills can be unlocked in the Guild and with the Survivalist as any other heroes.

Though the fixed quirks can be removed as normal via the Sanitarium and all other factors work the same as any other character, the hero's name cannot be modified, and the outfit cannot be changed in-game.*

(* However, the outfit can be easily changed in the game files; see "Forcing outfit changes", below).

Claiming backer heroes

Backer heroes can be claimed and added to the roster by entering the Stage Coach, pressing the [Enter] key and typing the name of the desired hero, and then dragging them to your heroes list, as normal. A backer hero can be dismissed and later re-claimed, even on the same turn.

Forcing outfit changes

Although outfits can't be changed via the game controls, they can be changed by switching the order of outfits as listed in the "heroes" folder. This method also works with extra hero outfits provided by mods, so the change of outfit will be seen in-game.

Example: The Chuma Abomination backer hero has the third outfit prescribed as the fixed one in-game (a maroon color). If the player wants Chuma to wear the second outfit (greyish in color), they need to change the designating letter of the second outfit ("B" by default) to "C".

• Folder structure: Darkest Dungeon > heroes > abomination > abomination_C

First, you have to rename the file "abomination_C" to something else, like abomination_Ctemp. Then rename abomination_B to abomination_C, and finally rename the abomination_Ctemp to abomination_B. Note that the outfit order of all Abomination characters will reflect this change.

It's best to keep the outfits named so that the game can recognize them (abomination_X and replace X with a capital letter of the alphabet, like A, B, E or others).
