The loathing bar in-game. In the image presents 1 loathing.
Loathing is a mechanic present in Darkest Dungeon II. It represents evil taking over the world and it's the heroes' responsibility to fight it.
The objective of Loathing is to increase the difficulty of the expedition mainly by increasing battle disadvantage and Flame drain. Loathing has 4 phases (0 Loathing to 4 Loathing) and although Loathing can be manageable, the player should not allow loathing to reach the last phase as it presents a much greater threat than any of the previous phases.
Increasing Loathing[]
During the journey the player may encounter roads and nodes that increase the loathing by 1
Decreasing Loathing[]
Loathing will decrease by one each time the heroes complete a fight in Resistance Encounters, Creature Dens, Cultist Encounters at Oblivion's Ingress or Rampart nodes, killing the Shambler or Collector, and conquering a Lair. Heroes must complete the battles, as simply arriving and rejecting the battles or not completing the Boss of the lair will not grant the loathing decrease.
Loathing levels[]
Loathing has 4 levels in total:
| The Loathing Abates | The Loathing Whispers |
The Loathing Festers |
The Loathing Howls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing | +10% Flame Drain +20% Enemy Advantage Chance (Battle Start) |
+25% Flame Drain +25% Enemy Advantage Chance (Battle Start) |
+40% Flame Drain +33% Enemy Advantage Chance (Battle Start) |
Upon reaching maximum Loathing, the party will be afflicted with powerful debuffs depending on the act and the confessional boss will become stronger.
Trivia[]
- Loathing used to be generated by the "Doomsayer" and "Shattered Will" negative quirks by certain road banters until the "Void Between Us" Relationship update
