A doctor, researcher and alchemist who prefers to hang back, eating away at her foes with stacking damage-over-time abilities like toxic clouds & plague-filled grenades. She is equally effective in a support role, blinding and confusing foes while enhancing a party's survival with damage-increasing tonics, and remedies for bleed and blight effects.

Camping Skills[]

The Plague Doctor makes use of experimental remedies and risky healing practices to cure her companions' ailments, and restore their vigor. Eager to prove the effectiveness of her latest untested concoction, she will inject herself - blindly faithful in its beneficial results.

Camping skills are special skills heroes can use while they are camping. They take a certain number of "respite" points to use, and can only be used once per camp (unless the skill says otherwise). Most heroes have three shared camping skills and all heroes have 4 unique camping skills (with the Flagellant being the exception, having only unique camping skills). Only 4 of these can be equipped at one time. Any Buffs or lasting effects given from a camping skill lasts for 4 battles.

The Plague Doctor practices and experiments during camp, and her tonics yield health benefits for the party and herself. She can cure disease, buff and heal.

Tactical Analysis[]

Playstyles[]

The Plague Doctor prefers to blight her foes with a deadly concoction of poison dwindling their health away. While usually she is occupying the back-ranks 3 or 4 offering support and Damage over Time. She has two of the three Stuns in the game that can reach Rank 4. This alone makes her extremely powerful, but she also has some very good utility as-well as secondary Healing and offensive capabilities with her Blights.

What makes Plague Doctor unique?[]

Her skill-set is incredibly useful and versatile able to clear away all DoT from herself or any other ally, stun the back-ranks of the enemy formation usually before they can even attack. She's one of the heroes that focuses mainly on Stunning alongside Abomination. Similarily to him, most of her kit takes a backseat to make space for her Stuns to shine. Blinding Gas is an autopick for any Plague Doctor, since it stuns both of the enemy backliners. This trades her own action for two actions, making it one of the best Stuns in the game just with that alone. Unlike the other Stun that stuns two enemies, Barbaric YAWP! from Hellion, it has no direct downside. The only limitation it has is a 3 times use per battle, which isn't a problem, since spamming Blinding Gas isn't very effective due to the Stun resist the enemies get after being stunned once. So it would take 7 Turns to actually be in trouble because Blinding Gas can't be used anymore. (Stun every 2nd Turn, so Turn 1, 3, 5. Can't use on 7) Fights lasting this long is extremely rare and having backline enemies left alive to Stun is even rarer. This makes Blinding Gas one of the best Turn one moves to be found in the game since it denies most of the threat of enemy compositions.

Disorienting Blast is also by no means a bad Stun, although it doesn't usually see much use since Blinding Gas fills the role it tries to fill. The only niche it has over Blinding Gas are it's ability to be used from Rank 2, the Shuffle, the ability to Stun Rank 2 and clearing corpses. That might seem like a lot, but most of these advantages don't matter a whole lot for the largest part of the game. Rank 2 Plague Doctor isn't where she truly shines, since Rank 3 Plague Doctor can do anything the Rank 2 variant tries to do. Both clearing Corpses and Shuffling are good to have, but not as versatile as most of her other moves. There are specific Bosses, such as the Crocodilian, where having Disorienting Blast can be quite nice, but for the most part, Disorienting Blast gets shafted to make space for her better moves.

Similarily, Emboldening Vapors is a niche pick as well. Due to the nature of buffs, they aren't extremely effective during most fights, especially with Plague Doctor rarely finding time to use one when she could be stunning or blighting enemies instead. Very good for specific fights as well, mainly Baron, but not a common pick for the average Plague Doctor.

The last move that doesn't deal damage, Battlefield Medicine is a very good secondary heal. It can remove DoT's, meaning that it can heal much more than it suggests . Removing even a simple 1 Point Bleed that lasts 3 Turns means that this move healed damage that's on par with a lvl 1 Vestal. Healing a 10 Point 3 Turn Bleed from the Uca Savage effectively heals 30 Points which is around what a Occultist highroll heals. Furthermore, it will always heal a base amount, allowing Plague Doctor to get allies off of Deaths Door. Since it can't heal great numbers though, it's rarely enough to sustain a full team by itself. Using it as a secondary heal can be effective though, especially when using Occultist as a main healer to remove the Bleed of his heal when it appears.

Plague Doctor's damaging moves are all great. Plague Grenade can be a great follow-up for a Turn 1 Blinding Gas, to finish off whatever low-HP backliner is still standing. Relying solely on Plague Grenade itself to deal with enemy backliners is usually a bad idea though, since it takes a long time to whittle them down. Having someone, like Flagellant with Rain of Sorrows, support Plague Doctor and makes use of the Stuns Blinding Gas is a good idea. Noxious Blast is the highest hero single target Blight in the game and a great option for hitting the enemy frontline. Aside from the great damage it offers, it also applies a -ACC debuff, which might not seem like much, but still stacks up very quickly and can sometimes prevent an action by having the heroes dodge an enemy attack. Having this on top of great damage is a nice benefit. Incision is a weird one. It usually competes with Noxious Blast about which move should be used to hit frontline. Running both is usually a bad idea since they overlap a lot. Incision technically deals more damage in a vacuum due to the higher upfront damage, but Noxious Blast has the advantages of being able to use it from Rank 4, it having both Blight and Ranged synergy with the rest of her moves and having a defensive upside in addition to offensive power. Picking which one to bring really depends on the situation, but generally Incision is better for Blight resistant places when Plague Doctor doesn't have +Blight chance from her Trinkets. Most of the time she still runs Noxious Blast though.

Trinketing[]

For her first Trinket, she usually wants Blasphemous Vial or whatever stats you can get that are similar to it. There really is no replacement for it since it gives Plague Doctor basically all the stats she wants. ACC, Blight and Stun chance for basically no downside since most backline Stress dealers get Stunned. Her second Trinket is usually something for more SPD. Going before enemy backliners and stunning them for other heroes to take out on Turn 1 makes most fights very easy since the biggest threats don't get to act. If the Plague Doctor has another source of SPD (Quirks, Crimson Curse), it's possible to run another supportive Trinket instead. That can be extra Stun-chance, Blight-chance or something defensive.

Class Trinkets[]
  • Diseased Herb - A good very early Trinket if you have nothing else. It's a very small upside for no downside.
  • Rotgut Censer - One of the best early ACC sources. The -Max HP rarely takes off more than 1 HP for making all of her attacks more consistent. It usually gets outclassed by Steady Bracer very quickly, but until then it's a very good ACC option.
  • Witch's Vial - 15% Stun chance for no downside. Very good early on until you find the usual Blasphemous Vial + SPD combo. A good second Trinket even later on if you have SPD covered.
  • Poisoned Herb - Another very good second option when SPD is covered later on. A huge amount of Blight chance to blight even blight-resistant enemies very consistently. The downside makes her a bit fragile, but Stunning enemies usually takes care of that.
  • Bloody Herb - The dedicated Incision Trinket. Does it's job very well and makes Incision a really good move. If you find space for it, you can use it.
  • Blasphemous Vial - The must-pick. One of the best Trinkets in the entire game since it gives Plague Doctor all the stats she wants.
  • Subject #40 Notes - Horrible. Getting extra HP is nice, but not as nice as what other Trinkets offer. 35% Disease resist doesn't matter. She already has great Disease resist and a 1 Point camp skill that removes Disease on herself.
  • Dissection kit - Straight up worse Bloody Herb. Not getting ACC really sucks and the 25% dmg on Ranged skills probably won't make much of a difference.
  • Set - Together the set is usually worse than just running Blasphemous Vial + Bloody Herb. That combo gives much more stats, especially ACC.
  • Ashen Distillation - A great second Trinket if you have SPD covered. Getting more Blight chance is nice and having extra defenses with a huge amount of dodge and Healing received is great.
Notable neutral Trinkets[]
  • Steady Bracer - 10 ACC on her Ranged moves is great until you find Blasphemous Vial.
  • Ancestor's Pistol - Even more ACC and SPD. Very good if you never want her to miss.
  • Prophet's eyes - Rank 4 PD really likes this since it gives even more ACC, SPD and -Stress to counteract Blasphemous Vial somewhat.
  • Feather Crystal - Pretty much the best SPD Trinket until you can find Ancestral stuff/Trophies.

Equipment[]

The Plague Doctor wears only light cloth - intent on remaining as far from melee combat as possible. From a distance she lobs toxic sachets that can blind, disorient, and eat away at her foes.

Each Hero has Trinkets unique to them that only they can equip. The Plague Doctor has eight; 3 common, 2 Crimson Court and 1 uncommon, rare and very rare. In the base game, her trinkets are herbs, vials, and a censer. The Crimson Court DLC adds a subject notes and dissection tools.

The Crimson Court DLC added special Trinket Sets, two for each hero. They confer powerful bonuses to the hero equipped with them, and having both equipped at once yields an additional bonus, which is shown greyed out at the bottom. The origin dungeon for all Trinket Sets is the Courtyard and they all have the rarity Crimson Court. The Shieldbreaker Trinket SetExclusive to The Shieldbreaker DLC, however, is only obtainable through her final 6th and 7th nightmare encounters and won't be dropped or given as a reward in the Courtyard. Trinkets you already have will stop dropping, so there's value in not selling the ones you don't like until you get the ones you want.

The Color of Madness DLC added trinkets with a new rarity, Crystalline. Each hero has their own unique crystalline trinket which can be bought from Jeweler inside the Nomad Wagon with Crystal Shards found within the Farmstead.

District Bonus[]

The Crimson Court DLC adds Districts to the Hamlet, some of which confer passive buffs to heroes.

Trivia[]

  • The Plague Doctor's predetermined name is Paracelsus, taken from the Swiss physician of the same name who is credited as the founder of toxicology.
  • While most characters have seven trinkets, The Crusader, Highwayman, Plague Doctor, and Vestal all have the most at eight.
  • The plague doctors of popular culture (those of the time of the bubonic plague) were not officials and many were completely unqualified. Those who took up the iconic garb were mostly young, inexperienced outcasts from the world of medicine at the time. These individuals were known to create and sell radical, bizarre, and quackish remedies based on personal theories.
  • "Auribus Teneo Lupum", mentioned in a Hopeless camping quote, is Latin for "Holding a Wolf by the Ears". It describes a situation in which there is no right answer or no good outcome.
