== Nightmare Made Material == The Shieldbreaker has a 50% chance to experience a flashback when camping, where you will encounter Pliskins, Rattlers, and Adders depending on the dungeon level. The Shieldbreaker will warn the party if a nightmare will occur through a few unique barks after you've chosen to eat such as "This night holds no comfort for me". The flashback cannot be avoided with "Prevent nighttime ambush" skills. At the start of the nightmare, she receives 20 Horror for 6 rounds which cannot be removed with Laudanum, so consider whether it would be wise to bring her along on quests longer than short, as she will almost certainly be extremely stressed by the time the event is over. She cannot become Virtuous during the flashback battle, and once she reaches Death's Door, the flashback counts as failed. Upon failure the Shieldbreaker will be healed off Death's Door and receive a debuff for +33% stress and -5 ACC for the rest of the quest, while the rest of the party suffers a similar +15% stress debuff. These fights can be made much easier by putting the Shieldbreaker's stress before the battle as close to 0 as possible and using camping skills like Pep Talk, the Hellion's Revel, and the Crusader's Zealous Speech to lower the stress damage taken by the Shieldbreaker; with a -30% modifier to stress taken, the six rounds of Horror will only deal 97 stress. However, further using skills that reduce stress, like the Jester's Inspiring Tune (unusually useful as it both heals stress and gives stress resistance), is wise; although the snakes have no dedicated stress skills, crits will still deal stress damage, and the Pliskins' attacks have very high chances to crit while they remain stealthed. Enable the Shieldbreaker's Expose skill before camping in order to remove Stealth from enemy Pliskins. Any level 0 Shieldbreakers should ideally finish a short Novice expedition to raise themselves to Resolve level 1 or higher before going on a medium mission, so that they have minimal Stress penalties during a flashback if it happens. Should you manage to defeat the snakes without having the Shieldbreaker reach Death's Door, there are great rewards to be had. The Shieldbreaker will receive a quest-long buff of -33% stress and +3% CRIT while the rest of the party receives a quest buff of -15% stress. The snakes will also drop Aegis Scales, a Shieldbreaker trinket, and Journal Pages that tell the story of the Shieldbreaker. The journal entries will be available at the Ancestor's Memoirs whether or not you bring them back to the Hamlet, so there is no point in wasting inventory space on them. The enemies fought will depend on how many previous encounters you have defeated; each encounter will only be fought a single time. Encounters 4 and 5 can only be fought during a Veteran or Champion difficulty quest; the last two are available on Champion difficulty only. If no applicable encounter is available when camping, e.g. camping during a Novice quest after the first three encounters are completed, then the Shieldbreaker will never have the flashback, and you are subject to the usual nighttime ambush rules. Once the seventh encounter is beaten, All Shieldbreakers will no longer receive flashbacks when camping, and instead will receive a buff for +1 SPD, +10% DMG, and +10% PROT for 2 battles. These are the enemies fought for each encounter: {|class="wikitable" style="text-align:center;" !class="tabletitle"|Encounter
Number !class="tabletitle"|Rank 1 !class="tabletitle"|Rank 2 !class="tabletitle"|Rank 3 !class="tabletitle"|Rank 4 !class="tabletitle"|Expedition
Level !class="tabletitle"|Reward |- |1 |Pliskin |Rattler |Rattler |x | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:green;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Apprentice | class="accent1tablecell" | Venomous Vial |- |2 |Pliskin |Rattler |Rattler |Pliskin | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:green;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Apprentice | class="accent1tablecell" | Shimmering Scale |- |3 |Pliskin |Rattler |colspan="2"|Death Adder | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:green;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Apprentice | class="accent1tablecell" | Dancer's Footwraps |- |4 |Greater Pliskin |Greater Pliskin |Greater Pliskin |Greater Pliskin | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:orange;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Veteran | class="accent1tablecell" | Fanged Spear Tip |- |5 |Greater Pliskin |Irritated Rattler |colspan="2"|Sinister Adder | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:orange;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Veteran | class="accent1tablecell" | Cuirboilli |- |6 |Terrible Pliskin |Enraged Rattler |colspan="2"|Nightmarish Adder | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:red;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Champion | class="accent1tablecell" | Obsidian Dagger |- |7 |colspan="2"|Nightmarish Adder |colspan="2"|Nightmarish Adder | style="text-align:center;font-size:9pt;background-color:red;color:#FFFFFF;font-weight:normal" | Champion | class="accent1tablecell" | Severed Hand |} Spoilers These are the journal entries that detail the Shieldbreaker's story. {|class="wikitable tablebg" style="text-align:left;" |style="background-color:#171010" colspan=3|A Beautiful Thing 1/7 |- |" |I am a beautiful thing, they say. And so my hands are tied, and I am put in a caravan next to golden idols and jeweled icons. together, we are a priceless cargo of dazzling rarities, bound for the Vizier's treasury. There will be no more leering crowds, no more coins thrown at my feet. I breathe a wordless thanks to my liberator, as it slithers away into the shadows. At last, I am free of my gilded cage. At last, I finally understand: a thing cannot be truly beautiful until it is broken. |β |}
