Shifting, swaying - she mesmerizes her prey before the final strike.
~ The Ancestor

The Shieldbreaker is one of the playable Characters in Darkest Dungeon. She is exclusive to the Shieldbreaker DLC.

Class Description[ | ]

Hailing from the distant windswept dunes of the east, the Shieldbreaker arrives in the Hamlet! Deadly as a viper, her iron will has been forged in the heat of the blazing desert sun. Though outwardly demure, her emancipation from the barren wastes came at a price so terrible, it haunts her dreams even now...

The Shieldbreaker is a powerful ally in the fight to reclaim the Estate and banish the evil that squats in the Darkest Dungeon. A highly-tactical hero with solid damage dealing capability, she truly excels when countering monsters with high protection and those who guard their allies. Her movement, speed, and targeted abilities make her a valuable ally for dismantling intractable monster groups. Though she possesses relatively low health, the Shieldbreaker maintains high survivability thanks to her Aegis Shield.

Combat Abilities[ | ]

A sandstorm of grace and fury, the Shieldbreaker dances through the ranks, delivering precision strikes of remarkable power. Sundering armor, breaking enemy formations, and leaving the taste of venom wherever she goes, the Shieldbreaker is a remorseless combatant.
~ Guild

Note: New Shieldbreakers will always come with the Pierce skill.

(All buffs and debuffs last for 3 rounds unless otherwise specified.)

Camping Skills

Though quiet and demure while the fire blazes, the Shieldbreaker is haunted by nightmares of her past. These visions are so powerful that she must vanquish them in the dreamscape or awaken sluggish, tired, and stressed.
~ Survivalist

Camping skills are special skills heroes can use while they are camping. They take a certain number of "respite" points to use, and can only be used once per camp (unless the skill says otherwise). Most heroes have three shared camping skills and all heroes have 4 unique camping skills (with the Flagellant being the exception, having only unique camping skills). Only 4 of these can be equipped at one time. Any Buffs or lasting effects given from a camping skill lasts for 4 battles.

The Shieldbreaker's camping skills are all buffs, including ones with somewhat situational use, like giving other heroes armor piercing or preventing a hero from being marked. She also has self-buffs to increase her survivability, or her offensive ability with blight. However, nightmares of brutality long since past still haunt her, and to the tormented mind there is no difference between a threat real or imagined...

Nightmare Made Material[ | ]

The Shieldbreaker has a 50% chance to experience a flashback when camping, where you will encounter Pliskins, Rattlers, and Adders depending on the dungeon level. The Shieldbreaker will warn the party if a nightmare will occur through a few unique barks after you've chosen to eat such as "This night holds no comfort for me". The flashback cannot be avoided with "Prevent nighttime ambush" skills.

At the start of the nightmare, she receives 20 Horror for 6 rounds which cannot be removed with Laudanum, so consider whether it would be wise to bring her along on quests longer than short, as she will almost certainly be extremely stressed by the time the event is over. She cannot become Virtuous during the flashback battle, and once she reaches Death's Door, the flashback counts as failed. Upon failure the Shieldbreaker will be healed off Death's Door and receive a debuff for +33% stress and -5 ACC for the rest of the quest, while the rest of the party suffers a similar +15% stress debuff.

These fights can be made much easier by putting the Shieldbreaker's stress before the battle as close to 0 as possible and using camping skills like Pep Talk, the Hellion's Revel, and the Crusader's Zealous Speech to lower the stress damage taken by the Shieldbreaker; with a -30% modifier to stress taken, the six rounds of Horror will only deal 97 stress. However, further using skills that reduce stress, like the Jester's Inspiring Tune (unusually useful as it both heals stress and gives stress resistance), is wise; although the snakes have no dedicated stress skills, crits will still deal stress damage, and the Pliskins' attacks have very high chances to crit while they remain stealthed. Enable the Shieldbreaker's Expose skill before camping in order to remove Stealth from enemy Pliskins. Any level 0 Shieldbreakers should ideally finish a short Novice expedition to raise themselves to Resolve level 1 or higher before going on a medium mission, so that they have minimal Stress penalties during a flashback if it happens.

Should you manage to defeat the snakes without having the Shieldbreaker reach Death's Door, there are great rewards to be had. The Shieldbreaker will receive a quest-long buff of -33% stress and +3% CRIT while the rest of the party receives a quest buff of -15% stress. The snakes will also drop Aegis Scales, a Shieldbreaker trinket, and Journal Pages that tell the story of the Shieldbreaker. The journal entries will be available at the Ancestor's Memoirs whether or not you bring them back to the Hamlet, so there is no point in wasting inventory space on them.

The enemies fought will depend on how many previous encounters you have defeated; each encounter will only be fought a single time. Encounters 4 and 5 can only be fought during a Veteran or Champion difficulty quest; the last two are available on Champion difficulty only. If no applicable encounter is available when camping, e.g. camping during a Novice quest after the first three encounters are completed, then the Shieldbreaker will never have the flashback, and you are subject to the usual nighttime ambush rules.

Once the seventh encounter is beaten, All Shieldbreakers will no longer receive flashbacks when camping, and instead will receive a buff for +1 SPD, +10% DMG, and +10% PROT for 2 battles.

These are the enemies fought for each encounter:

A Beautiful Thing 1/7
" I am a beautiful thing, they say. Flawless as the sea of dunes. Graceful as the desert winds. Captivating as a shimmering mirage. They stare, they linger, they watch me without blinking. "
A Beautiful Thing 2/7
" Such exquisiteness must be admired, they say. And so I am made to dance for their desperate, dust-pitted faces; for their watery, bloodshot eyes; their cracked, grinning lips. I am not a person to this debauched audience, I am an exotic wonder. I am a beautiful thing. "
A Beautiful Thing 3/7
" Such loveliness belongs in the palace, they say. And so my hands are tied, and I am put in a caravan next to golden idols and jeweled icons. together, we are a priceless cargo of dazzling rarities, bound for the Vizier's treasury. I know this tyrant's reputation, and I am afraid. "
A Beautiful Thing 4/7
" As the wagon careens along the mountain road, I make my choice. I will not go to the Vizier. I will not be this man's prize; his plaything. With practice grace, I slip my bonds, and lunge for the open air. The wagon teeters and the guard shouts. Wheels lift, horses panic... "
A Beautiful Thing 5/7
" I am lodged in a jumble of corpses and wreckage. My arm is pinned. The serpent appears silently from behind a rock, tongue tasting the air. The bite is quick; the venom slow. It runs cold in my veins, inching up my arm - forcing me to make a terrible choice.
A Beautiful Thing 6/7
" The knife is dull, and I must work quickly. In my panic, I saw, hack and gouge. My cries are met with the silent indifference of the dunes, the chill of the desert wind, the cold light of the moon. I am sacrificing my beauty for a chance to live; paying for my future with the only currency I've ever had. "
A Beautiful Thing 7/7
I stare at my severed hand, my bloodied arm. There will be no more leering crowds, no more coins thrown at my feet. I breathe a wordless thanks to my liberator, as it slithers away into the shadows. At last, I am free of my gilded cage. At last, I finally understand: a thing cannot be truly beautiful until it is broken.

Tactical Analysis[ | ]

The most noticeable feature of the Shieldbreaker is that all but one of her skills cause her to move about the formation. It's best that you plan your team setup to account for this. The simplest way to use her is to position her at the very front, with position 2 being a close combat unit like the Leper, Crusader or Flagellant. Her forward-moving skills are still usable at the very front of the formation so the movement side effect is almost negligible there.

Despite her focus on Blight, the Shieldbreaker's biggest assets are armor penetration and guard-breaking, so she can operate in nearly any location. Pierce and Puncture are offensive staples that can hit any part of the enemy formation and are commonly used to counter enemy tanks. Serpent Sway raises blocks to offset her low HP, giving her a few turns of safety so that you can patch her up. The last slot is up to your preference and the rest of the party. Impale is a straightforward AOE skill that has a drawback of very minor Blight ticks; Captivate is great for exploiting in a Mark party provided the Shieldbreaker can be shuffled to position 2 with ease; Adder's Kiss is strong but has limited range; Expose is mainly Stealth removal utility but comes in very handy against stealthed snakes in her flashbacks.

Naturally, the Shieldbreaker is home to a dancing party, and fits well with heroes that have movement skills like the Jester, Highwayman and Grave Robber. The Jester, in particular, is a great companion to the Shieldbreaker during a camping flashback, as he can relieve her Stress to counteract her automatic Horror. The weak Blight from the Shieldbreaker's Impale can work to the Grave Robber's advantage as it will enable her damage bonuses against Blighted enemies.

Equipment[ | ]

The Shieldbreaker wields a spear and buckler, affording her impressive offensive reach and a modicum of protection. Her dancer's garb is better suited to the stage than the dungeon; she must be quick to survive.
~ Blacksmith

Unlike other games, equipment upgrades in Darkest Dungeon are linear, all bought at the Blacksmith.

Each Hero has Trinkets unique to them that only they can equip. The Shieldbreaker has seven; 1 common, 2 uncommon, 1 rare, 1 very rare and 2 trinkets of Shieldbreaker rarity, that act similar to Crimson Court trinket sets. Her normal trinkets are all different items and accessories that she once owned, and her set trinkets are her dismembered hand and the knife that severed it.

Unlike other heroes, her normal trinkets cannot be found randomly. They can only be obtained by defeating the snakes within her nightmares.

The Crimson Court DLC added special Trinket Sets, two for each hero. They confer powerful bonuses to the hero equipped with them, and having both equipped at once yields an additional bonus, which is shown greyed out at the bottom. The origin dungeon for all Trinket Sets is the Courtyard and they all have the rarity Crimson Court. The Shieldbreaker Trinket SetExclusive to The Shieldbreaker DLC, however, is only obtainable through her final 6th and 7th nightmare encounters and won't be dropped or given as a reward in the Courtyard. Trinkets you already have will stop dropping, so there's value in not selling the ones you don't like until you get the ones you want.

  • My wounds quicken my steps.

Becoming Abusive[ | ]

  • You are as graceful as elephants! Quick as camels!
  • You've no rhythm, no grace!
  • Your skills are as coarse as the cloth you wear!
  • You are the sand in my boot!
  • You would not last a day in the open desert!

Stressing Party[ | ]

Trivia[ | ]

  • The Shieldbreaker's default name is Amani.
  • In her original promotional artwork, her right hand is missing. However, in-game, it is her left hand that is gone.
  • The name of her final armor, "Sirocco", is the name given to hurricane-force winds in the Mediterranean that build up over the Sahara desert.
  • The name of her level 3 and 4 weapons, "Assegai", refers to a style of throwing spear used across Africa.
  • The name of her final weapon, "Adder's Fang", refers to the attack of one of the snakes encountered in her nightmares, the Adder.
  • No backer heroes exist within this class, because backer heroes are Kickstarter users suggestions before the original game was released; the other three heroes with no backers are the Antiquarian, the Musketeer and the Flagellant.
  • The Shieldbreaker's crystalline trinket, the Spectral Speartip, is the only Shieldbreaker-specific trinket that is not obtained from a nightmare.
  • The Shieldbreaker, along with the Houndmaster, are the only heroes with unique sprites for every combat skill.
