~ The Narrator on entering a Skirmish expedition in the Warrens |
While the Ancestor was trying his hand at blood rituals, he used the ancient Warrens as a dumping grounds for his failures and underwhelming results. By the time the Heir arrives, the Warrens are now home to the descendants of those experiments called the swine, a warrior race of pig men whose only desire is to butcher and feed on any human they can get their claws on.
Description[]
The Warrens is the third dungeon that can be explored. An incredibly ancient system of aqueducts and tunnels built for unknown purpose, it is now a corpse-choked cesspit that houses the ravenous, disease-ridden beast-men known as the Swinefolk, and all those deranged or monstrous enough to ally with them.
Warrens Music[]
The combat music that plays within the Warrens are Battle in the Warrens and Return to the Warrens.
Warrens Strategy[]
Because the Swinefolk are all hybrid Human/Beast monsters, the Bounty Hunter and Hound Master are helpful here, as well as trinkets that deal extra damage to Human and Beast foes.
Provisions[]
- Antivenom is essential for encounters with carrion eaters and spiders that are abundant here.
- Medicinal herbs are extremely useful, as they can be used for three curios (Dinner Cart, Makeshift Table, and Moonshine Barrel). Unusual debuffs (such as those that halve received healing) can also be cleared with herbs.
- Bandages are very useful due to prevalence of Bleed traps and attacks. They can also be used to loot the Rack of Blades curios.
- Holy Water is occasionally useful for Eldritch Altars and Pile of Bones.
- Torches are not necessary to stockpile in large quantities, due to short corridors. They can, however, be used to purge a negative quirk with a Pile of Scrolls.
- Skeleton Key is occasionally needed for locked chests.
- You need at most 2 shovels. Usually, just 1 will suffice if you have good scouting, allowing you to avoid paths that have obstacles (since it's a grid layout). Even without good scouting, you can almost always just go around the obstacle (ie, take a different path to get to the subsequent room).
- Food is not as important here since multiple curios grant food here, especially with Medicinal Herbs.
Party Composition[]
Most enemies encountered in the Warrens wear some form of armor as protection, making heroes such as the Shieldbreaker or Grave Robber's armor-piercing attacks very helpful. Alternatively, heroes capable of inflicting bleed attacks can also bypass the innate protection of enemies in this area, however, most enemies cannot be affected by blight due to having very high resistance to it. Any hero capable of stress relief is recommended as the Warrens have more dedicated stress-damage enemies than any other location. Heroes proficient in scouting and resistant to disease can be invaluable for the reasons noted below. In terms of their defenses, enemies here tend to be highly resistant to blight, but still vulnerable to bleed. The most commonly encountered enemy type is Beast, with many of the enemies having a secondary Human typing.
It's also worth noting that due to the type of map layouts common here, scouting is more useful here than in other locations (3x4 quadrilaterals can be almost fully scouted on the first room entrance).
Two heroes that work very well in this area together are the Bounty Hunter and Houndmaster as they each possess attacks that have damage bonuses when used against Human or Beast-type enemies and both heroes have mark application and empowered abilities. The Hellion and Flagellant are also effective front-line heroes because of their multitude of bleeding attacks. The Jester can also be counted on for inflicting bleed to multiple enemies, if he's not busy buffing and relieving Stress. Since there are numerous ways to become Diseased here, a Plague Doctor or Grave Robber is also handy for removing any diseases during an expedition.
Notes[]
In order to avoid Disease, it is typically best to kill smaller enemies quickly, as they are more likely to spread illness. Stress damage enemies such as the wretch and drummer should be dealt with swiftly as well. When dealing with the Swinetaur, it is wise to clear all other enemies first, as this will force him to stay in the first rank where he can't use his strongest abilities.
